RoEduNet facilitates the EduRoam project deployment in Romania. The project status in
Romania is at startup level, a nationwide RADIUS server being deployed and registered upwards,
also, at the moment, 3 universities are offering wireless access for EduRoam participants.
Research activity:
RoEduNet is a member of the GEANT consortium but was not very actively involved in the GN2
project due to the fact that the implementation of the dark fiber (DF) infrastructure for RoEduNet
has been delayed and RoEduNet was not able to provide the necessary test bed for GN2.
In the framework of the SEEREN2 project, RoEduNet contributed to the tendering procedure for
the communication links for the beneficiary countries and is responsible for WP4.There are no
SEEREN2 connections to RoEduNet, the topology of the SEEREN2 network was a result of the
tender for connectivity.
At the end of 2006 RoEduNet received the approval for the financing of the SEELight (South-
East European Lambda Network Facility for Research & Education), project started within
HiPERB (Hellenic Plan for the Economic Reconstruction of the Balcans) initiative. The total
amount for the project is about 6.9 MEuro, 20% contribution of RoEduNet from National
Authority for Scientific Research. The main goals of the project are: deployment of a SEE
regional lambda networking facility (redundant optical ring based on DF: Thessaloniki, Sofia,
Bucharest, Budapest, Belgrade, Skopje and back to Thessaloniki), purchasing of new and/or
upgrading of existing networking equipment, deployment of the South-Eastern European
Network Operation Centre (SEENOC). The implementation of the project was postponed for
2008 by the Romanian Ministry of Economy and Finance to complete some internal procedures.
On the national level, the feasibility study for the RoEduNet2 network based on the DF provided
by SC Telecomunicatii CFR has been issued by RoEduNet and the tender dossier has been
published. However, the procedure for RoEduNet2 has been suspended and will be continued in
2008. Other two projects for structural funds were submitted to the National Authority for
Scientific Research and the authority decided based on the evaluation of the projects to finance
the feasibility studies. The first project OPTIM (OPtical Transmission of Information
Measurements and development laboratory) aims to build a new laboratory dedicated to DWDM
technology. Research will be conducted on the RoEduNet2 network within a special agreement
with the producer of the equipments for: new modulations techniques to increase the bandwidth
of the each lambda (channel) and build new devices for special purposes: dispersion control,
amplifiers etc. The second project GRIDIS (GRID cluster for NE of Romania) aims to provide
important computing power for the research community in NE of Romania: High computing
power at least 6500 Gflops with high availability of the resource, the cluster being installed into
the Data Center of RoEduNet in Iasi.
Each year RoEduNet organizes an international conference, which now (2007) is at the 6th
edition. The purpose of this conference is to bring together the academics and the companies from
Romania and from abroad for a discussion about computer networking, in its technical, social and
strategic aspects, with a special focus on directions and applications in education and research.
