International Connectivity:
The international connections for Romanian NREN have a total capacity of 1.244 Gbps provided
using two STM4 circuits from Bucharest to the GEANT POP in Budapest (Figure 58). A new 10
Gbps link has been ordered to DANTE since January 2007, but due to the long procurement
procedure the circuit will be available, according to DANTE, in March or April 2008.
Starting with Q2/2007 since the national network links were upgraded to 1Gbps the congestion of
the international become critical, the usage of the Bucharest to Budapest links increased to more
than 90%. To alleviate this problem and save international traffic, the capacities of the national
peering links between RoEduNet and major commercial ISPs in Romania were upgraded and all
operate at 1 Gbps.
Overall traffic values of RoEduNet on all external connections, including peering connections,
have a value of about 4.5 Gbps.
A new data center for RoEduNet is operational and will host all international connections for
Romanian NREN and the connections at the regional level within the country. The new data
center has been installed in the premises of National Authority for Scientific Research. In fact, in
2007 two modern data centers with power supply backup for about 10 hours were installed in
Bucharest.
Networking services:
There are no major changes at the service level offered by RoEduNet to the connected
institutions. All Universities in Romania are connected to RoEduNet and also all research
institutions except for some private Universities and research institutions. The number of other
educational institutions connected to RoEduNet remains at about the same level as 2006.
A full range of IP services are provided to all connected institution, including IPv6. Due to the
legal issues, VoIP is not provided as a service but it is used for communications between NOCs
within RoEduNet. Also, for some research projects support for VoIP traffic has been offered to
the universities involved.
Special circuits were installed and tested for the Romanian GRID community (Romanian Tier 2
Federation). At this moment there are three 10Gbps connections in production service:
1.
RoEduNet to IFIN to connect the GRID sites and VOs from Institute for Space Sciences
(ISS) ISS (ALICE / AliEn) and Horia Hulubei National Institute of RD for Physics and
Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH): NIHAM (ALICE / AliEn); NIHAM (ALICE / GLITE),
RO-02-NIPNE (ATLAS, HONE / GLITE), RO-07-NIPNE (ALICE, ATLAS, LHCb,
SEE, SEEGRID / GLITE) and RO-11-NIPNE (LHCb)
2.
RoEduNet to Politehnica University in Bucharest to connect the site RO-03-UPB, UPB
(ALICE / AliEn)
3.
RoEduNet to Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iasi to connect the new cluster from the
Digital Communications Department (not yet affiliated to any VO)
Also, other GRID sites in Romania like National Institute of RD in Informatics from Bucharest
(ICI) RO-01-ICI (LHCb, BIOMED, SEE, SEEGRID, GLITE) and ITIM Cluj Napoca benefits of
the new Gigabit infrastructure.
