Appendix 16. SANET in Slovakia
Submitted by Tibor Weis
January 2008
The SANET network infrastructure in Slovakia (Figure 57) covers all Slovak Universities and
institutions of Slovak Academy of Science in 23 towns. The network is completely built up on
single mode dark fiber leased among the cities. The Network is configured as three rings
providing full redundancy with transmission speed ranging from 1Gbs to 10Gbps. In the cities,
SANET built up its own optical trunks terminated at SANET PoPs in Cisco Catalyst 6509 Gigabit
Ethernet switches.
In the year 2007 SANET continued to upgrade their backbone to 10Gbps. This process is going to
be finished in the first half of 2008. Then all SANET backbone lines will operate at a speed of
10Gbps.

In October 2006 the Central European NRENs ACOnet Austria, CESNET Czech Republic
and SANET Slovakia were interconnected by a triangle of dark fibers lit up by advanced
photonic technologies which are able to provide multiple 10Gbps channels, without the in-line
equipment.
This triangle was extended to the PIONIER Network in Bielsko-Biala Poland through the Czech
Republic.
