Appendix 28: CERN Network Report
Edoardo Martelli
Last Updated February 2007
CERN network description:
CERN has been working on the upgrade of his whole network in order to meet the entire
requirement for the LHC. The revision has concerned almost all the aspects: architecture,
bandwidth capacity, security, manageability, monitoring.
Architecture:
The CERN network (Figure 91) has been split in two main backbones: the LCG and the GPN
(General purpose network).
Figure 91: The CERN network, showing the LCG and general purpose backbones.
The LCG backbone connects all the experiments and the Tier0 machines .It is directly connected
to the LHCOPN for the Tier0-Tier1 connectivity.
The GPN backbone provides connectivity to all the CERN users and the general purpose services.
It bridges all the dedicated networks at the site. It provides world-wide connectivity to the users
and the public services, included Tier0 to Tier2 connectivity.
