US LHCNet VINCI:
The VINCI (Virtual Intelligent Networks for Computing Infrastructures) 0 project is based on the
MonALISA 0 framework of distributed services and agents. Developed in the scope of the NSF
funded Ultralight 0 project, it will be deployed in US LHCNet to provide the LHC community
with the capability to effectively manage the network resources.
The system takes both the end-hosts (storage nodes) as well as network elements as resources into
account, in order to provide means for robust data movement among the data centers. The use of
distributed services avoids any single point of failure in the system.
An overview picture of the VINCI system is shown in Figure 23. The top part of the picture
shows the components, and main interactions between them, the bottom part indicates the
underlying physical layer. The communication between the components is implemented using
MonALISA's proxy layer for secure interconnect of services and agents, thus avoiding point-to-
point connections between all components. The secure channels are composed of redundant sets
of two or three sockets for added reliability.

components (top) and the underlying physical layer (bottom).
